WHAT IS ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION?
LISO 14001 certification is an international standard for production plants that adopt an "Environmental Management System". It is a voluntary approach that aims to help companies continuously improve their environmental impact, whilst remaining compliant with applicable legislation. Companies are responsible for setting themselves relevant targets and measuring their results. The strategic objectives of this important standard can be found in the three main commitments that participating companies must subscribe to:
1) to reduce the negative environmental impact of operations (manufacturing processes etc.), i.e. undesirable changes in the atmosphere, water or terrain;
2) to adhere to applicable legislation and standards and environmental requirements;
3) constantly improve the practices mentioned above.
NOT JUST WORDS, DAILY PRACTICE
Snaidero's manufacturing philosophy with regard to its kitchens has always been characterised by concrete facts. This is why, also when it comes to managing environmental matters, the Company takes concrete steps rather than limiting itself to simple verbal declarations. Steps that contribute, day by day, to keeping the environmental impact of the various individual activities under control. Thus systematically pursuing improvement in a coherent, efficient and sustainable manner. Our "Environmental Management System" has been ISO 14001 certified since 2003. A highly sought after recognition, achieved completely naturally, as it formalised a Company trend that was already deeply rooted in our everyday operations.
Snaidero has always been committed to using partners and suppliers that adopt environmentally-aware manufacturing processes. In other words operating practices that are truly responsible and in full compliance with applicable sustainability legislation.
WATER IS A PRECIOUS RESOURCE
"Un-renewable resources" are those that are present in finite quantities or that have regeneration times longer than a human lifetime. Water is the main one of these. On a global scale unfortunately it is in the middle of a serious crisis that continues to get worse. Water plays an important role in Snaidero's production plants: it is used in the coating process and in the air-conditioning system for the work areas. Particular care is taken to reduce water consumption, with a strict waste water management and monitoring policy in place. The Company has applied this regime for some time. From 1999 up to now – using water saving techniques and careful management – Snaidero has reduced its water consumption by over 70%, both with regard to water for industrial use and drinking water.
SEPARATED WASTE MANAGEMENT
The correct management of waste represents a huge opportunity for sustainable growth, both in terms of reducing the consumption of natural resources, and for developing new technologies for recycling materials and recovering energy. Snaidero has had a series of stringent waste reduction policies in place now for several years. This also includes reusing and recycling policies, above all when it comes to paper and packaging. Since 1999, the quantity of non-recyclable solid waste produced by the Company has been reduced by over 90%.
Carbon dioxide is a gas that forms during the combustion process. Its release into the atmosphere causes serious environmental damage, endangering the delicate balance of the global climate via the greenhouse effect. Excess emissions are the direct consequence of industrial activity. In order to generate energy, industries rely on the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal and petrol. Other factors that increase the greenhouse effect are motor vehicle emissions, heating systems and forest fires. Snaidero has chosen to make an active contribution to the issue, setting up strict policies aimed at reducing the Company's consumption of fossil fuels: since 1999, their use in production has been reduced by over 85%.
